The Best Accessory For Fall Is Outdoors

Can you believe the air is getting cooler each night; and the sun sets a little earlier? These are definite signs fall is coming. September can be a great time to enjoy your yard, the humidity is gone and so are the bugs. What better way to embrace the crisp air, colorful leaves and all things pumpkin than to spend it wrapped in a warm blanket , around a fire pit, surrounded by family and friends.

Just like I switch out my light-weight summer wardrobe, I do the same in my outdoor living space. I add blankets, and lots of them, in a variety of textures. I like knitted throws and the woolen plaid ones with the rolled fringe. I also switch out my pillows with something in a crewel or homespun fabric.

At the Jersey Shore we’re not surrounded by a lot of beautiful, bold colors of falling leaves so I add deep red, golden yellow or burnt orange mums to my outdoor living space. You could use the pots you have, or use unconventional planters like metal buckets or bushel baskets. Have smaller space that needs sprucing up? Fill small gourds with pansies in a deep purple, or remove the tops of heirloom pumpkins and add dwarf sunflowers.

This is the time I really look forward to entertaining outside. Create a casual centerpiece for your outdoor dining table, using colorful gourds, pumpkins and acorns. By now my hydrangeas have turned from pink and white to deep red and mint green. They make amazing floral arrangements. Table clothes in linen and homespun or even burlap have a great fall vibe. Remember to bring the indoors outside, by flanking a rustic picnic table with slipcovered chairs.

Don’t forget to illuminate…..everywhere! Today there are so many choices, from plug-in twinkle lights and flameless candles to solar hanging lanterns. Cool air and warm lights create an irresistible ambiance.

Maybe your outdoor living space isn’t outside at all; like a screen porch or a sun room. Add an indoor/outdoor rug to add instant warmth. Leave stacks of blankets and pillows in a willow basket for those moments when you want to cuddle up with a good book or take a nap. Here again, a centerpiece, scented candles and fall color combos will set the mood to personalize your space. For more ideas I’ve prepared an idea-book on Houzz and updated my outdoor living board on Pintrest.

Don’t’ forget to share with family and friends that are always looking for new ways to spice up their outdoor living space or maybe you know that ONE person who knocks it out of the park all the time. I’d love to hear from them and as always to see pictures, pictures, pictures!
