FAQs: Decision Factors
Design Factors
Do you offer fabric recommendations for specific situations (pets, children, outdoor use)?
Yes, I can suggest fabrics specifically designed for your lifestyle. For instance, performance fabrics like Crypton are great for pet-friendly or high-traffic homes Sunbrella and Outdura are good choices for outdoor furniture requiring UV- and weather-resistant options.
What types of fabric should I avoid for slipcovers?
Certain fabrics may not be ideal for slipcovers. For example, delicate fabrics like silk or loosely woven materials may not hold up well in high-use areas. I recommend durable, washable fabrics for slipcovers to ensure practicality and longevity.
What does the term “double rubs” mean?
The decorator/commercial fabric manufacturers test the wear of their fabrics, by rubbing them. Imagine every time you get up and sit down you cause abrasion, you “rub” the fabric you are sitting on. This guide is beneficial to the consumer. You could safely assume that a fabric with 10,000 rubs, may not be as durable as one with 50,000.
That doesn’t exclude a fabric with lower rub numbers. You may be covering a piece of furniture that does get much use, and you love the fabric. That’s fine. But if you are looking to cover a piece that gets a lot of use, a low rub number could fail the job.
What is the difference between a slipcover and reupholstery?
Slipcovers are removable, fitted covers made to go over your existing upholstery, while reupholstery involves stripping the furniture down to its frame and replacing the fabric permanently. Slipcovers are a more affordable and versatile option, especially for refreshing the look of your furniture.
